Fathers Day Gift

My wife is always coming up with good ideas for gifts. This year for Fathers Day, it was a book that we can use to help think of things to do with our kids. The book is called Kids Love Virginia. The website for the book is Kids Love Travel.

What I like: The book is organized into different areas of the state. The book also has a special index called "activity index". This index categorizes all of the different activities. It then references each activity under the appropriate category and what area that activity belongs to. Great way to quickly find an activity in a particluar area!

What I dislike: I want to be able to further refine my activities. I'd like to filter on different criteria such as age appropriatness and cost. Maybe that's a little too much to ask for from a book? How about a secure website where people who have purchased the book can log into? There you could filter activity by anything you want (area, cost, age, etc.). Kind of like Carmax, where you can filter on a number of car related factors.

In this day and age, I don't see a reason why this shouldn't be possible. All in all, it's still a cool present that I'm sure we will use a lot. Thanks Honey!

Hi Dad,
Just happened upon your blog entry about KIDS LOVE VIRGINIA. As the co-author, I appreciated your quest for even more filters to catagorize by cost, age, etc. To be honest, we've already invested 1,000 hours in that one book alone and still charge around $15.00 for it! Would you consider a fee-added service online? We'd have to pay someone to log and update our database to provide that service and maintain it. Most we talk to at consumer conventions and radio call-ins would rather not pay more and use different colored highlighters to mark their book according to specific parameters such as cost or seasonal activities. We don't put age suggestions anymore as it varies by family and we always tip you off (look at Miscellaneous notes) if a place favors much younger or older kids. Our goal is to provide the insights not found anywhere else (we've been to 5,000 places kid-testing)but leave the 20 minute quick planning to you and yours.
One sidenote you may not be aware of is our UPDATES pages on our www.kidslovetravel.com website. Here, you'll find major changes to the print book to keep the book fresh for years - and, it's still free!
